About Glenn
Glenn Morey, Director, Infrastructure Product Specialist, has worked at IFM for 11 years. Within this time, Glenn has been able to fulfill various secondments within the organisation and develop his professional skills across a number of business areas.
“My career initially began in a law firm, Minter Ellison Lawyers, where I worked for seven years. Alongside my university studies, I began working in the print room and worked my way up to Business Development and Financial Operations. In about 2013, I made the choice to change direction and go into financial services, which is when I got a role in the Risk and Compliance team at IFM. At that time, there was only four of us globally in the team. The prospect of growth and the idea of investing in real assets were the key drivers of my interest early on”.
“I’ve been very fortunate to experience roles in a range of business areas during my time at IFM, which I love. During my time as an Analyst, I was offered the opportunity to move to Seoul, South Korea, to support the opening of the office there, which was a key highlight. It was an amazing experience where I was afforded the opportunity to interact with many senior leaders of the firm as they flew into Seoul for business. I even got to have dinner with the CEO, Brett Himbury, and his wife when they were there for the winter Olympics as their daughter competed. During this time, we raised over US$1bn for the infrastructure debt business from some of the largest Korean insurers. I was also amazed at how welcoming our clients were during my time there.”
After this, Glenn had the opportunity to work in New York to better understand the global Infrastructure business, which eventually became his focus on return to Australia. Before this though, a similar assignment became available in London which he was also able to take advantage of – giving him even greater global exposure to our global business.
After reflecting on what he truly wanted out of his career, and with support from the business, Glenn was able to identify opportunities in the Business Development space that he could explore. From here, he was able to move from the Risk & Compliance team to Global Client Solutions, where he currently sits, and says himself, “it bridges the gap between our investor relations team and the investment team.”
“IFM provides opportunities for those within the business to grow and develop through cross-functional business unit secondments or transfers. The opportunities at IFM for anyone willing are endless, all you need to do is put your hand up”.
“Amongst the opportunities I’ve experienced globally, I recently attended a four-day McKinsey Leadership course to reflect on my leadership style and how I engage with colleagues. It also really got me thinking about the impact health and wellbeing has on employee's effectiveness, which I believe IFM champions strongly.”
When asked what excites him most about IFM's growth in the next few years, Glenn said:
“The expansion of the infrastructure platform excites me the most. Moving up the risk curve into Value-Add Infrastructure is an exciting and logical extension of the capability set of the team. I am excited to support this as we bring this product to market.”
When asked, ‘Why IFM?’, Glenn’s answer is resounding.
“It’s got to be the people and the purpose. I have met so many people at IFM that I will be lifelong friends with and, given we spend so much time at work, I strongly believe that our purpose - to invest, protect and grow the long-term retirement savings of working people - is what unites us together”.
“Knowing that I’m supporting people to live a comfortable retirement is what gets me out of bed in the morning – besides the kids!”
Speaking of IFM's opportunities, Glenn most recently took advantage of our parental leave to spend time with his family following the birth of their second child, Laurel, who is now a few months old. Isaiah, Glenn’s oldest child, is three.
“Being present to support my partner and watch our children grow up is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It also makes me appreciate how easy work is compared to looking after two children!”
Outside of work, Glenn enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf with friends, turning his hand to some DIY projects around the house, and is a keen AFL and American Football fan – specifically Essendon and the Buffalo Bills.
