About Ryan
In the six years that Ryan Weldon, Investment Director for Debt Investments, has been at IFM, he expresses that being able to hone in on the variety of skills he previously acquired from his time working within global markets at HSBC, and applying these to IFM’s mission, has left him feeling very fulfilled.
“While I valued my experience working at a bank and engaging with global markets, ultimately, I found myself seeking greater fulfillment beyond contributing solely to the bank's bottom line. After completing the CFA program, I was eager to transition into a role with a more deliberate focus; one that would fully leverage my analytical skills and align with a mission I found gratifying and meaningful. Joining IFM provided precisely that opportunity. Enabling me to apply my expertise in a setting where each dollar generated directly supports working people around the world.”
Before joining IFM, Ryan began his career at HSBC as a Trader, specialising in U.S. Treasuries.
“During my tenure, I contributed to growing the business from a top 20 ranking to a top seven position and achieved recognition as a top three Trader by notional volume executed within my sector for several months. My experience at HSBC provided an invaluable opportunity to apply and expand upon the skills and knowledge I developed at The George Washington University and through my CFA studies.”
Speaking of the opportunities IFM continues to provide him with, Ryan emphasises how our organisation has allowed him to connect and collaborate with our global colleagues in-person, as well as physically attend the sites of some of our owned assets and portfolio companies.
“IFM has provided me with the opportunity to share my market insights with diverse internal and external audiences, enabling and promoting me to engage actively with journalists and market participants. As a result, my commentary has been featured in media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and CNBC. Additionally, my role has involved global travel, allowing me to visit and review assets we own and interact directly with their treasury teams. Engaging closely with our wholly owned assets, and making recommendations across IFM’s full investment lifecycle, has significantly deepened my appreciation for IFM’s mission and investment strategy.”
When asked what excites Ryan most about IFM's growth in the next few years, he said:
“IFM is strategically positioned to offer a diverse range of funds across multiple sectors, leveraging its core expertise as an infrastructure investor. I am enthusiastic about supporting the expansion of this fund lineup by collaborating closely with investment teams to optimize portfolio structures and implement effective hedging strategies, ultimately enhancing risk-adjusted returns.”
To Ryan, what sets IFM apart from other organisations is its ever-growing opportunities to professionally and personally develop skills.
“IFM stands out due to its dynamic work environment, empowering employees to pursue new opportunities while effectively managing their core responsibilities. In my experience, this flexibility has allowed me to collaborate across teams, proactively identify efficiencies, and uncover improvements that might otherwise have been overlooked.”
Outside of work, Ryan cherishes spending quality time with his wife, Joanna, and their 16-month-old son, Henry, and dog, Winnie. Having recently relocated from the city to the suburbs; Ryan frequently explores the local parks and trails for family hikes whenever the weather permits! On days when outdoor activities aren't possible, they enjoy visiting the aquarium or attending children's concerts at the library.
“I don't think I've ever sung ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ as often as I did this past winter!” Ryan added.
